Last and stay independent

Smooth seasonality, pay yourself, structure your activity, reinvest in milestones and never sell your soul. The final chapter of Moooney Academy.

Many manage to grow. Very few last. Almost nobody lasts free. This is the chapter we wish we’d read before starting.

Seasonality: your year isn’t flat

Creator revenue follows advertisers’ calendars, not yours. Q4 explodes (Christmas, Black Friday, budgets to spend). January and February collapse. Summer slows. None of it reflects your work.

The rule: each good month, set aside the difference with your median. Median €3,000, December €7,000: €4,000 goes to a reserve that pays for February. It’s also why repaying as a percentage of revenue makes sense: more in December, less in February. The funding follows your season instead of fighting it.

Paying yourself: you are your first employee

Most creators don’t pay themselves; they live on what’s left. That’s the exact recipe for never knowing whether the activity is profitable, and for burning out. Three accounts, even virtual: the activity account (everything in, everything that serves creation out), your salary (a fixed monthly transfer based on your median, not your best month), the reserve (the surplus of good months; aim for three months of salary, then six). The day your fixed salary goes out stress-free three months running, your activity is a business.

In France and Belgium, how you declare changes what you keep and what you can do. The micro/sole-trader status is perfect to start, but has ceilings and VAT rules to know (platform revenue from Ireland, for instance). A company costs more to run but protects your assets, eases brand deals and opens professional funding. Most creators above €40 to 50k a year gain from incorporating. No tax advice here: that’s an accountant’s job, and a very good investment. What we say: a status is chosen, not suffered, and Moooney works with partners to help you incorporate when it’s time, because professional funding needs a professional structure.

Reinvesting in milestones, never all at once

Sustainable growth is a staircase, not a rocket. Each step is a milestone: a clear goal, a calibrated investment, a measured result, then the next step. The milestone is your protection. You never borrow for three projects at once. If a milestone fails, you lost a project, not your activity. That’s why a Moooney funding is always tied to a defined project and can be released in tranches: the first to start, the rest when the first signals show. Not distrust. It’s how every solid business grows.

Never sell your soul

Three ways to lose independence, and they always arrive as good news. Selling equity: an investor with a cheque; ten years later you can’t decide without them and 20 % of everything you build is theirs. Ceding editorial control: the day you wonder “will they like it?” before publishing, you’re no longer independent. Letting your data go: when your audience and numbers belong to a platform or an intermediary, you’re a tenant of your own creation.

From these three traps came the Moooney pledge, written to bind us as much as to protect you:

Never a share of your company. Never a word about your content. Never your data resold.

Revenue-based funding exists precisely for this: access to capital without giving up a piece of yourself. You repay, it’s over, you’re free. No investor stays in your life.

The community: independence isn’t built alone

Today, media belong to a few fortunes. We believe independent content creation is an answer, and that it deserves capital that looks like it. That’s why Moooney builds a community: creators funding other creators, fans backing free creation, returns smoothed across the whole, with no single investor able to weigh on a single outlet. Nobody buys influence. Everyone funds independence. And because understanding is the first form of independence, this Academy will always be free.

Do it in Moooney: steer your milestones and your repayment from your dashboard. Milestone reached, flag planted, next one prepared.

What comes next

You’ve come full circle: understand, fund, grow, last. The rest is written in your creation. When you’re ready for the next milestone, your Creator Report is waiting. It’s free, it takes minutes, and it commits you to nothing.
